Exhumations occur for a number of reasons, including:
Organising an exhumation is a lengthy and expensive process. An application must be made to the Secretary to the Department of Human Services for an Exhumation Licence.
In addition, an exhumation requires the consent of the Cemetery, the holder of the Right of Interment for the Place of Interment and the next of kin. This consent is required for both full body and cremated remains exhumations.
